EXAMPLE IS BETTER THAN PRECEPT
"Example is better than precept" is a well known adage. First let us see the meaning of the words. "example" and "precept".
"Example" means "thing characteristic of its kind or illustrating a general rule." "Precept" means "rule or guide especially for conduct."
In every field example is better than precept. There is no point of merely telling someone to do something. First of all we should show the person how to do it properly. Then only it will be a fruitful effort.
We have seen how the drill-sergeant teaches new recruits their military drill. He first displays the drill. He shows them how to slope arms, present arms and trail arms and so on. Then his pupils watch his movements and try to copy them.
Technical education cannot be picked up only from books. The learner has to engage in the craft. He has to go into the carpentry workshop, mill, factory or any other working place and watch and copy trained workmen as they actually do their tasks before them.
This adage is more important in the moral sphere. Today our moral values are declining rapidly. Parents should always try to lead exemplary lives. Children are very observant and are keen critics. They notice very quickly whether their father does himself what he teaches them. For example, sometimes he tells them not to tell lies. But if he himself is untruthful, his teaching will have only a little effect.Children are great mimics. They always imitate their parents. To set children a good example is far more important than teaching them any.
At the end of it all, we are left with something to say to ourselves. That is, example is better than precept 💚
